iPhone 3GS 8GB Unlock issue with iPad Baseband (Error code -1)

Some iPhone 3GS 8GB cannot be unlocked with iPad Baseband 6.15.00. Those iPhones are produced with Toshiba baseband chip instead of the original Infineon chip. Therefore it's not compatible with the iPad baseband. If you attempt to flash it with the iPad baseband, you are running the risk of corrupting the baseband and bricking the phone. You will end up with NO wifi/bluetooth/imei after the baseband is corrupted. Restoring the phone in iTunes will result in error code -1.

iPhone 3GS 8GB that is produced before 2011 are safe to flash. However, certain ones produced in 2011 that is after week 28 are not safe. But because phones come from different factories, you mileage may vary.

Some confirmed safe to flash begin with:

The list will be continuously updated. You may post your serial and your unlock experience in the comments and it'll be updated here.

P.S.

Some folks are asking about if there is a possible solution. At the moment, if you are unlucky enough that bricked the phone. There's no way to recover. However, there is a software based baseband erasing/flashing method that is actively under development. This method may be able to re-flash the corrupted baseband. Once the developer releases the software, we'll post it too.

You may also try your luck at apple store genius bar. In general, attempting to flash the baseband will void the apple warranty. But YMMV.

For iPhone 3GS 16GB or 32GB, Apple stopped producing them in 2011. However, apple may still refurbish them so some 3GS 16GB/32GB may still have a serial number greater than week 28. We have reports that some iPhone 3GS 16GB/32GB with serial number greater than week 28 are bricked.

One anonymous reader tipped that for most accurate result, it is advised to open up the phone and check the id on the baseband chip, if it is 36MY1EE it will work, if it's anything else, it will brick. Thanks!

It's confirmed that the baseband downgrade will NOT work with the toshiba baseband. So if your phone is bricked due to flashing a 6.15 baseband, you cannot recover it via baseband downgrade.

    2. Warning!!! I have an iPhone QR148XXX (therefore refurbished) and I didn't quite believe this list so I opened my device (I do not recommend you do that!) and checked the chip physically. It is a NEW bootrom! This means that if I had flashed iPad baseband it might have damaged my phone permanently. As a result, I recommend you checking your bootrom first in case your iphone is after the 28th week of 2011. Do not open it as I did (I found it very hard to reassemble it and chances are you will end up damaging your phone) but use the program iDetector insted. iDetector checks your bootrom and tells you whether the one you have is the new or the old bootrom - google "iDetector: Check iPhone 3GS New / Old Bootrom". It would be useful for other users if those who have managed to flash their iPhone with iPad baseband could now test this program just to double check if it is accurate, ie, the program really shows they have the old bootrom.

    3. Just wanted to inform you all that I have successfully flashed my iPhone3GS 8GB, with serial QR148XXXXXX, with iPad Baseband. First, I downgraded it to 4.1 then flashed with iPad baseband. After that, I updated it to iOS 5.1.1 and I downgraded the baseband to 05.13.04... Although I was nervous during the whole flashing time, I managed to pull through... My iPhone 3gs now works great and I have unlocked it with the help of ultrasn0w... Maybe the chip that Johnny found on his device was an infineon one and not the toshiba... Flashing Infineon chips are said to be possible while flashing toshiba chips will brick your device.. Just sharing my experience guys!! THANKS A LOT TO THIS SITE!!! :)

So just the 8gb or should the more recent 16gb/32gb ownerd also be worried?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Apple does not produce any more new 3GS 16GB/32GB since 2011. So it should not be a problem for 3GS 16GB/32GB owners. However, do check the product year/week of your phone. And be careful if it happens to be manufactured in 2011.

  33. It doesnt matter if you have toshiba or infeneon. To be more technically, Apple updated baseband chip in new iphone versions so if you take it apart and check the chip you can know exactly it can be flashed or not:

    1. Remove the LCD.
    2. Remove the baseband metal shielding.
    3. Check the label on the baseband flash chip.
If your flash chip is Intel 36MY1EE or non-Intel it is safe to proceed.
If your flash chip is Intel 36MY1EH, 36MY1EG it will die 100%.

In other words, 36MY1EE is compatible with iPad baseband, everything else is not

  56. ok i finnally solved my problem on my iphone 5.1 with 138 serial and the 6.15 baseband. After flashing i lost my wifi bluetooth and the signal of my iphone 3gs.

I did this ( cause i was desperate), i put it back to factory settings. Just when it starts factory settings i reset my iphone. I think this way my problem was bigger then it was before. the iphone was black but itunes could see it and said iphone needs to be reset or somting. I did the reset and after the reset i was back in bussiness.

i still have a locked iphone but it has wifi and with the correct sim i can call( wich i dont have). ill wait a bit longer till i find a way to do it right this time..... i dont wanna get in this situation again!! good luck if this is anny help to u guys.

  92. I unlocked a iphone 3GS with BB 6.15.05 and FW 5.1.1.
    I used the sn0wbreeze-v2.9.6.
You need the FW 5.1.1, obviously sn0wbreeze-v2.9.6, redsn0w_0.9.14b2, itunes, the last verssion and iREB-r5.
1 . open the sn0wbreeze and open the FW, choose oldbootrom, and build the FW
    2. put the iphone on DFU mode.
    3. Open the iTunes, this will say, iTunes found a device bla bla bla...
press Shift and Restore and update Button, open the sn0wbreeze_iPhone_3GS-5.1.1-9B206_oldbootrom.ipsw file and restore the iphone...
    4. Open Redsn0w and go to jailbreak, choose install Ipad BB.
